It all started when…

Born and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland, Stewart is currently a UX research manager with Ocado Technology in Barcelona. He wasn’t always in this area however. With a passion for understanding the world around him, Stewart spent many years pursuing a career in social anthropology. This pursuit has taken him from his hometown of Aberdeen, to a Master’s degree in the Netherlands, a PhD in Edinburgh, and eventually a postdoctoral fellowship in Berlin.

However, always with an eye towards how anthropology might be applied in more practical settings, a career in industry beckoned. Stewart has worked in various roles that have allowed him to explore new working methods in applied anthropology from ethnographic researcher with Intel, Ireland in their Health Research and Innovation Group, to qualitative researcher with Edinburgh College of Art, and consultant with a leading startup in Berlin.

In 2017 , Stewart took the opportunity to take up a new role in Barcelona. Working with the likes of Facebook, Hitachi, and IMDb, Stewart has managed and delivered a variety of projects that have used ethnographic research and service design to develop insights for some of the most well-known companies around the world.

In addition, Stewart has published in various journals, organised several conferences, and is the author of the book 'An ethnography of NGO practice in India: Utopias of Development', published by Manchester University Press.

In his spare time, he enjoys Crossfit, photography, and long-distance walking.
