EPIC 2019 Agency

EPIC 2019 Agency

I presented a Pecha Kucha (20 slides x 20 seconds) in the plenary session of the EPIC 2019 conference (the world’s premier business anthropology conference) on the subject of robots and the fallacy of agency.

EPIC2019 was held in Providence, Rhode Island and focused on human agency in the new age of automation. It explored what it means to have opportunity, choice, and influence, and the ways in which agency is exercised in an increasingly complex world. How do models of human behavior and culture shape new spaces of opportunity and risk? When agency is reduced to automation, what gets left out? When machines make business decisions, what is the impact on human agency? How can human agency can be enhanced by design?
